New Year is the best time for a Career Change

The perfect time to think about a Career Change is the Christmas / New Year period. There are many reasons for this. Firstly, if you’re going to get a bonus, then you’ve just had it. Secondly, you’ve probably got a few days off to think through your career change strategy. Thirdly, It’s the time of year to make a New Year’s resolution. Fourthly, many other people are thinking about changing career too, so when they take the decision and quit their jobs, vacancies become available. All in all, it’s a great time to clear out the old and bring in a new career.
If you are bored with your old career or if our circumstances or values have changed, then you should certainly consider a career change. The first step towards a new career is to make the decision to do it. This may sound simple, but you do need to firmly make the decision to change career or you won’t ever actually take the necessary steps to move toward your new career.
Once you have made the decision to change career, you need to decide what that new career should be. This is the difficult bit and you should consider using a Careers Advice firm to help you with your career choice. The best careers advisors are occupational psychologists. They do an in-depth analysis of who you are – what you are good at, what interests you, what would suit your personality and what would be in line with your values and beliefs. They do by using psychometric tests. After the tests are completed, they will sit down with you and, drawing on their extensive knowledge of careers, will suggest careers they think would be most suitable for you and then help you decide on the best career choice for you. Career Analysts (www.careeranalysts.co.uk) is one such firm of Career Advisors who are all fully trained occupational psychologists.
Once you have made the decision to change career, you need to prepare yourself to go to work in early January and talk to your manager. At this stage, you might just say you are thinking about it and see what he/she says. You never know, they might offer you a more interesting career path in-house. At the same time, contact a firm of careers advisors and get some serious Careers Advice on what you should be aiming for in your career. Only then will you be able to focus completely on your future career path.
If you are at all uncomfortable in your present job, this really is the time of year to think hard about the next step and make the decision to move forward. If you don’t do it now, you will almost certainly be stuck there for another year. Time is the one thing you can’t buy on this earth. You only get so much of it so now is the time to decide… then act.
